Head teacher's Messages

Dear Families,

What a busy and exciting few weeks it has been at Pinner Wood! From the Christmas Fair to shows, pantomimes, talent performances, music recitals, and this week’s Christmas Dinner – it’s been wonderful seeing everyone come together. What I love most is how inclusive our celebrations are, welcoming everyone regardless of religion or belief.

A special shout out to the Early Years and Key Stage 1 teams for their incredible shows last week. Managing 180 Key Stage 1 and 130 Early Years children is no small feat, but you did it brilliantly! Thank you to everyone who contributed donations during the Key Stage 1 show – this raised £899.50 in ticket sales and £172.92 in donations, which is much appreciated in these tight budget times. Please know donations are always optional; we never want money to be a barrier.

We’ve summarised our fantastic term in the table and photos below – take a look!

Today, we said a heartfelt goodbye to Mrs. Bennett (Pastoral Leader) and Dennis, her beloved dog. The children created a video to show just how much she means to us. She’ll be greatly missed, and we wish her all the best for her new adventures. We’ll assess the needs of her role before advertising for a replacement and will keep you updated.

Finally, on behalf of all the staff and myself, thank you for your kind Christmas cards and gifts – they’re never expected but deeply appreciated.

As we head into the holidays, I wish you and your families a wonderful break. For those celebrating, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, 6th January – there’s no INSET day, so children return that day.

Take care,
Miss Marriott

Value of the Half Term -

This term, our focus has been on Barney Badger's message to "Choose Kind." Our assemblies and class meetings have highlighted stories of kindness and consideration for others. We always tell that children that famous saying.....

A Round up from our Leaders

Sporting News

Mr O’Brien

I would love to introduce myself and express how happy I am to have joined Pinner Wood and lead PE at this wonderful school. Despite a busy half term, I am finding my feet and believe, as a school, we can be extremely successful with sporting events, enrichment and competitions. My competitive nature is being instilled in the children and it's great to see so many already taking in competitions and sporting festivals. One of our Year 6 boys football teams already reaching a final and the other topping their group at the most recent football festival is just one example of this!

Currently, we have already this term:

  • Formed links and a relationship with Watford Football Club, visiting the stadium and having in person interventions led by a school engagement officer focused on building confidence and resilience

  • Achieved the Fit 4 Life Harrow Award

  • Run intra house games in Year 3 and 5....more to come next year!

  • Set up and are running a Change for Life lunch club, supporting more children with sport and physical activity

  • Have a huge range of sporting clubs on offer including basketball, football, netball, gymnastics, dodgeball, bench ball, dance, running club

  • Started the process to apply for the Sports Games Mark next year

Our sporting achievements have been:

  • Represented by the Year 5 girls football team at a London Bee's Cup competition

  • Year 6 boys reaching the final of the Harrow School Cup in football, narrowly being defeated!

  • Year 6 boys football team achieving top of their group in a recent football festival

  • Around 30 children competing in a very chilly cross country event - all of them finishing

  • Year 5 and 6 Gymnastics team competing at the Harrow Gymnastics club competition

After the break, we have netball league matches and Year 6 boys and girls football league matches. We will also be taking part in tag rugby games. We will be introducing multi skills activities in Reception and will apply for the Games Mark award!

I am extremely proud of the enthusiasm shown by Pinner Wood pupils and staff in all aspects of sport and PE in and out of school. I am looking forward to lots more opportunities and success next term.

Music News

Mrs Stephenson and Mrs Kraft

We have enjoyed a very musical Autumn term.

In October The Mozartists ran an engaging opera-based session with the Year 4 pupils which introduced them to the work of the child-prodigy. The pupils listened to different classical instruments played by professionals and explored the range of their own voices.

The Harrow Music Service festival programme began with pupils performing at Band Fest in November and Piano Fest in December.

The choir was honoured to sing at the turning on of the Christmas lights in Pinner alongside the Mayor and the Pinner Association. It was a fantastic performance with a wonderful atmosphere which showed the value ‘Heart of the Community’.

Other Christmas activities have included a concert at St Edmund’s Church where the band, choir and orchestra performed and a special Winter Concert for years 2-6 from the Harrow Music Service tutors which we were treated to on Monday.

The listening focus which we have enjoyed in class takes pupils on a journey through the history of music throughout the academic year. In Autumn 1 we listened to Medieval music and in Autumn 2, Renaissance and Baroque.

During the Spring Term we are looking forward to the Year 3 Percussion Project (in school), HMS events: String Fest and Choir Showcase, among other musical events planned for pupils (watch this space).

Thank you to all the pupils who have participated in music lessons, orchestra, choir and band this term. Remember to let your teacher know if you’d like to perform in assembly, as there is a termly programme.

Music lessons at Pinner Wood

On Monday the Harrow Music Service instrument teachers treated us to their Winter Concert. The pupils enjoyed the sound of all the instruments being played together and some told us they were inspired to learn a new instrument.

There are still spaces for this year to learn violin in school and, for a reduced price, your child can learn the violin from January. It may be also be possible for us to arrange the borrowing of a violin from Harrow Music Service. Please do talk with your child about this opportunity and inform the School Office as soon as possible if you would like violin lessons.

Curriculum and Sustainability

Miss Reeves

Another brilliant half term done – and look how much we have achieved! One particular highlight is our continued focus on developing our love of reading. We have had Pinner Library visits this term for our EYFS and KS1 children and Year 6 librarians, a visit from a local author, Bookmas, sharing new books through book reviews and Bounce Back to Reading. We have further author and illustrator visits coming up after the break, which is also very exciting! The workshops, trips, events and speakers have also been brilliant at promoting curiosity and intrigue, passion for subjects and really getting the pupils thinking about their learning in different contexts.

In Sustainability, we launched our pupil run Eco Refill shop – Reduce, Reuse, Refill – and it was a huge success. We will be opening once a month going forward. Bring a bottle to refill! Our Earth Friends have also worked hard to support the recycling systems in the school and Terra cycling.

Our TFL Ambassadors have also promoted Road Safety week through assembly and a poster competition. Our Parking Patrols have also been a good reminder to our families about parking safely around the school. They want to thank those who have been parking safely, crossing at the correct crossings not in the middle of the road and not parking on double yellow lines. We are so close to achieving our TFL Gold accreditation!

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers and parent helpers who have supported this half term with reading, trips, in class and other events. We could not do it without you!

Pastoral Learning

Mr

Mainwaring

As we come to the end of a very positive Autumn term, it has been wonderful to see our school community flourish while focusing on our core values. During the first half of the term, we focused on the value Step Up, encouraging children to take responsibility and rise to challenges. This half term, we have turned our attention to Choose Kind, fostering kindness and empathy across the school. These values have been brought to life through engaging assemblies, meaningful classroom learning, and home learning activities, ensuring our children embody these principles both in and out of school.

A particular highlight has been the completion of a special task, which allowed pupils to earn their second values badge for Step Up. It has been fantastic to celebrate their hard work and dedication to living out our values.

On the playground, we have faced the challenges of the gloomy weather and limited access to the field. To keep playtime enjoyable and productive, we introduced additional construction equipment, dress up clothes, organised ball games, and implemented a rotation for scooter use. These measures have helped to keep spirits high during breaks. Looking ahead to the Spring term, we are excited to introduce wellies as part of the school uniform. This addition will allow us to make better use of the outdoor space, whatever the weather brings.

In the lunch hall, we continue to see a high number of pupils accessing free school meals. With so many children to serve, we have focused on promoting positive behaviour and dining room etiquette. A particularly exciting initiative this term has been the introduction of the Fine Dining Club. This lovely idea from Mr. Parnell has been running for a couple of weeks and has been a big hit with the children. Those who demonstrate excellent behaviour during lunch earn a special invitation to enjoy their dining experience in the upstairs hall on Fridays with a teacher.

Overall, this term has been filled with growth, kindness, and resilience. We are so proud of the children for stepping up and choosing kindness. As we look ahead to the Spring term, we are excited to build on this strong foundation and continue creating positive opportunities for our school community.

Oracy Updates

Miss Thomas

As our first term as a Centre of Excellence comes to an end, we have been showcasing our Oracy offer across the country. In October, Miss Monroe and I spoke at the great Oracy Exhibition in Birmingham where we led a session on speechmaking and how we implemented this at Pinner Wood.

In partnership with Voice 21, we hosted our first Oracy Open Morning where 35 schools from across the country visited us to observe our practice, assemblies, School Council and hear about how we implemented Oracy across everything we do!

We are looking forward to hosting a further 40 schools in January for a local Oracy Open Morning.

Inclusion

Mrs Bretayne

The Acorn Centre is complete and both classes, Squirrels and Hedgehogs, are fully embedded as a vibrant and integral thriving community of Pinner Wood School. Inclusion continues to be at the heart of everything we do, and children from both classes have taken part in Christmas celebrations, activities, visits and event, including yesterday’s fabulous "Proud Party" in The Hedgehogs. Thank you to all staff, families, and children for contributing to a truly inclusive and supportive environment. We look forward to continuing to work together next term and beyond to make our school a place where every child feels valued, supported, and celebrated.

School Business

Matters

Mrs Tong

As the term comes to a close, we would like to recognise the outstanding efforts of the office and site teams in supporting the school community. Throughout the term, these teams have worked really hard to improve communications, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure the smooth running of day-to-day activities. Their ongoing contributions are vital to the continued success of our school, and we look forward to building on this progress in the months ahead.

Dreaming Big - A message from our Head Squad

This half term, Pinner Wood has been bustling with vibrant activities and incredible learning experiences!

Year 6 embarked on a culinary adventure with a South American fiesta, savouring chimichurri steaks, empanadas, and amazing salads. They also had an engaging VR workshop where they virtually explored South America and braved the Sahara to see ferocious lions up close.

Year 5 delved into the ancient Maya civilization, creating wells inspired by these fascinating tribes, and expanded their knowledge of planets and climates.

Year 4 have been mastering their timetables, playing hockey in P.E. and making delicious soups in DT as part of their European unit in Geography.

Year 3 crafted comfortable travel pillows, wrote heartfelt letters, and joined Year 2 on an enchanting trip to see Aladdin at the pantomime.

Year 2 also made informative leaflets about hot and cold places and dazzled everyone with their magnificent Christmas play.

Year 1 showcased their artistic skills by drawing detailed replicas of the Houses of Parliament in DT, writing perfect poems in English, and enjoyed a thrilling trip to the library.

Reception celebrated with their own Christmas play, met the marvellous Mr. Marvel, visited the Met Police, and explored the Church.

Pinner Wood has truly been a hive of excitement and discovery this term.

Next term in Year 6 some students are eagerly anticipating the chance to go swimming, and some are thrilled at the prospect of becoming prefects. Adding to the excitement, we’ll soon welcome the amazing author G.T. Jones, who wrote “The Beast Trials” - a visit that promises to be fascinating! The excitement is not just in Year 6, Year 5 are eagerly awaiting a visit to the oldest Gurdwara in Europe, which they are all extremely excited about. Additionally, their Happy Harrow assembly (written by Mrs. Adcock) is sure to be a highlight.

Our Year 4s are now diving into classy classification in Science and exploring the Anglo-Saxons in History. Year 3 are now going to be learning about the Ravishing Romans in History and will be diving into the book "Julius Zebra". Plus, they have an opportunity to join the new handball club, offering a fun and fresh way for them to stay active.

Year 2 continues to enjoy their outdoor learning and will have an amazing opportunity to learn about going to the moon! Our Year 1 students are looking forward to exploring their creative sides in Art.

In Reception they are looking forward to a food banquet, their Tesco shopping trip and forest school.

And finally, from all of us at Pinner Wood, we wish you a very Merry Christmas! May your winter break be filled with joy, warmth, and wonderful moments with your family. Have a fantastic holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year! 🎄✨

Heart of our Community - A message from the Friends

The Friends of Pinner Wood would like to extend a huge thank you to all the staff, parents, and the wider community for their amazing support this autumn term. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised over £12,500! This incredible amount has helped us purchase a new freezer for the tuck shop, vibrant murals for the playground, a festive panto for Key Stage 1, and a magical trip to see Wicked in the West End for our Year 6 students. Your kindness is truly making this a season of joy and celebration for everyone at Pinner Wood!

Governing Body Newsletter - December 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a long but very packed term at Pinner Wood this autumn. I cannot believe that I am already writing the end-of-Autumn term newsletter from the Governing Body! The school has been very busy and bustling with activities in recent weeks, including trips, Christmas performances, and the Friends’ Christmas Fair. I wanted to give a big thank you to the Friends of Pinner Wood—it is no small feat to put together such a wonderful event. I also wanted to thank all of you for participating, supporting, and fundraising for Pinner Wood.

The Governing Body recently reviewed the School’s Inspection Data Summary Report (IDSR), an annual report from the Department for Education based on last year’s results. We are thrilled to share that Pinner Wood remains significantly above national averages. The summary can be found below.

As you all know, we have recently had a Parent Governor election. We say goodbye and thank you to Fahim Choudhury, who has served as a Parent Governor for four years, bringing so much knowledge and experience to our Governing Body. During his time as a governor, he has worked on safeguarding and Pupil Premium achievement. His support and knowledge in those areas will be greatly missed! Please join me in thanking him for his commitment, dedication, and hard work over the years.

We now also welcome two new Parent Governors, Lewis Holmes and Rohit Joshi, who have shown much enthusiasm for the new roles they will be undertaking.

In this autumn term, the Governing Body has had the opportunity to look closely at the curriculum and the resources of the school. I think we are all acutely aware of how tight school budgets are at present, and we have been doing much work around income generation and cost saving, supported by Cindy Tong (our new Business Manager). The Governing Body has also been in school to look at safeguarding, pupil attendance, SEN provision, pupils’ voice, and the School Council.

The School Council were privileged to be invited to the Houses of Parliament to see politics in action—much like their own School Council. I am sure you will have seen some of the work they have been doing around keeping our school road safe during pick-up and drop-off. I hope we can all join them in showing our support for their message.

To find out more about the Governing Body, what we do, our plans, and our committees, please visit the school website or get in touch via our email address: governors@pinnerwood.co.uk.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday, and best wishes for 2025.

Year 5 Bikeability

We are delighted to have some free places available for some of our Year 5 children to take part in Bikeability training at Pinner Wood, run by two accredited cycling instructors. There are 30 spaces available and they will be given on a first come, first serve basis. The sessions will run during the week 3rd February and will be daily small group sessions.

Bikeability is about acquiring the practical skills to cycle safely and with confidence on today’s roads. For children to participate in school Bikeability training, they must have basic riding skills (without stabilisers).

There are three Bikeability levels and children will be looking at Level 1 and 2 in the training:

Level 1 is designed to give your child control over his / her bike and takes place in groups in a space away from traffic such as a playground or closed car park.

Level 2 will ensure your child is prepared for short journeys such as cycling to school. Training takes place in small groups on quiet, local streets, giving trainees a real cycling experience.

Sign up for the Bikeability training will open on Arbor on Tuesday 7th January and places will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Please note, children will need a bike to participate (but there are some spares available if needed) and a helmet.

EYFS and Year 1 Maths Workshops

After the holidays, we will be hosting a series of Maths workshops for our Reception and Year 1 parents. Workshops for our Year 3 and 4 parents will follow in Spring 2.
