Pinner Wood school is an outstanding school. Regular attendance and punctuality is paramount to our children reaching their full potential and making the most of the educational opportunities which the school offers them. Missing school means missing out. That is why at Pinner Wood we pay meticulous attention to our children’s attendance and expect all children to attend on time and ready to learn, every day the school is open, unless the reason for absence is unavoidable. It is the parents’ legal responsibility to make sure that their child attends school regularly and failure to do so may result in prosecution. Every absence must be categorised by the school and therefore we ask parents to adhere to the following procedures.

What constitutes an authorised and unauthorised absence?

Authorised absences are morning or afternoon sessions which the child has missed due to illness, medical appointments or emergencies. Any other reason would have to be deemed as exceptional and authorised by the Headteacher.

Unauthorised absences are holidays, visiting family, religious ceremonies not listed by the local authority or day trips taken in school time. Absences where the parent hasn’t advised the school or the absent has not been properly explained.

Absence procedures

Advise the school on the first day of absence by phone (you can leave a message on the school answer machine), by e mail or in person. In doing so, we are able to give your child an authorised absent mark if applicable. This procedure must be followed on a daily basis and must then be put in writing on the child’s first day back at school. Failure to advise the school will result in an unauthorised mark.

We ask all parents to avoid making appointments for children in school time. Where it is unavoidable we will expect parents to bring in an appointment card or letter.

Persistent Absenteeism

A child is deemed a ‘persistent absentee’ should their attendance fall below 90%. At Pinner Wood we monitor all our children’s attendance on a daily and weekly basis and will take action before this level is reached. Any child with an attendance level below 90% is seriously damaging their education and the school will request a meeting with the parents/carers to try to rectify this. In order for your child to reach full potential, please help us by ensuring your child's attendance stays above 95%.

Penalty Notices

Section 444(1) of the Education Act 1996 states…” If a child of compulsory school age who is a registered pupil at school fails to attend regularly at the school, his parent is guilty of an offence”. Section 444A of the Education Act empowers the Local Authority to issue a Penalty Notice where it has reason to believe that an offence under section 444(1) has been committed. The fine is £60.00 if paid within 21 days, increasing to £120.00 if paid within 28 days. Payment of the notice will discharge your liability for the non-attendance of your child(ren) for this period. Non – payment will lead to a court hearing for the original unauthorised absences.
